Groundhog Day

February 2nd. So many myths and rituals associated with the day: predicting the weather, Candlemas, a Scottish quarter day, the full moon. But it’s the story of the groundhog that strikes me. If he comes out on a cloudy day he’ll know it’s safe to stay outside: an early spring is said to follow. Wander out into strong sunshine and he’ll run back and hibernate. They say there’s a harsh winter still to come.
